Program Objectives

The primary purpose of the National Laser User Facilities (NLUF) is to provide NNSA's Inertial Confinement Fusion facility time for university-led high energy density experiments.

The objective of the National Laser User Facilities program is to maintain facilities (Laboratory for Laser Energetics facility at the University of Rochester) within an educational research environment, accessible to a broad community of academic and industrial research interests, for use:

  • As tools for conducting basic research experiments in both low and high energy density physics and laser-matter interactions; and
  • In providing research experience necessary to maintain a cadre of trained scientists to meet the nation's future needs in these areas of science and technology.
