Elimination of Weapons-Grade Plutonium Production
NNSA’s Elimination of Weapons-Grade Plutonium Production (EWGPP) program will enable the Russian Federation to permanently cease production of weapons-grade plutonium. The Russian’s three remaining weapons-grade plutonium production reactors, located in the Siberian cities of Seversk and Zheleznogorsk, also currently provide heat and electricity for the cities. NNSA is working with the Russian Federal Atomic Energy Agency (Rosatom) to shutdown the three remaining weapons-grade plutonium production reactors through the construction of new replacement heat and electrical production capacity. The reactor shutdowns will mark a major U.S. nonproliferation milestone objective.
