NNSA and MEXT to Co-host Second International Meeting on Next Generation Safeguards
WASHINGTON – The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) will co-host the second international meeting on Next Generation Safeguards from Oct. 26 - 28, 2009 at the Techno Community Square "Ricotti" in Tokai-mura, Ibaraki Japan. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Japan, the Nuclear Material Control Center (NMCC) of Japan and Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) will cooperate with this meeting.
The meeting was announced by U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu during his remarks last month to the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency. The first meeting, organized by NNSA's Next Generation Safeguards Initiative (NGSI), took place in Washington, D.C. in September 2008.
NNSA Administrator Thomas D'Agostino and MEXT Deputy Minister Yasutaka Moriguchi will give opening remarks and Japan Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Shunsuke Kondo will give keynote address between 9:30 and 10:45a.m. on Monday, Oct. 26. The meeting's opening remarks and keynote address are open to the press.
NNSA launched NGSI in 2008 to develop the safeguards policies, concepts, technologies, expertise, and international infrastructure necessary to strengthen and sustain the international safeguards system as it evolves to meet new challenges over the next 25 years. In addition to NGSI's U.S. domestic work, the program is working with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and international partners to keep pace with emerging safeguards challenges and provide a foundation for a broader global commitment to international safeguards.
